At a regular meeting of the Terrebonne Parish School Board on January 9, 2018, motion of Ms. Bonvillain, unanimously seconded, unanimously carried, the Board approved the following resolution recognizing January 2018 as "Local School Board Member Recognition Month" in the State of Louisiana:

RESOLUTION

Louisiana School Board Member Recognition Month January 2018

Whereas the education of Louisiana’s school-aged children is the foundation upon which the economic, social and intellectual capital of our state is built;

Whereas locally elected school boards play an important and vital role in a representative democracy, and decisions made by local boards of education directly influence instruction in Louisiana’s public schools;

Whereas these decisions affect the present and future lives of children, and also set direction to prepare all students to be competitive in a local, state, national, and global 21st century economy;

Whereas local school board members work with parents, businesses, education professionals, all elected officials and other community members to create the educational visions we want for our students;

Whereas this year’s theme – SCHOOL BOARDS MATTER! - reflects the relevance of local school board members as they advocate for public education with local, state, and federal leaders; and

Whereas School Board Member Recognition Month provides an opportunity to build stronger relationships between the thousands of people in Louisiana who champion the mission of public education and school board members; now, therefore be it

Resolved, the Terrebonne Parish School Board recognizes the contributions of the state’s local school boards to the academic success of its public school students and expresses its sincerest recognition to the local school board members for their focus on the well-being and achievement of children throughout the state; further

Resolved, the Terrebonne Parish School Board declares January 2018 as School Board Member Recognition Month and encourages local school districts and community leaders to appropriately recognize our state’s dedicated school board members; and be it finally

Resolved, that copies of this resolution be forwarded to all local media contacts and Terrebonne Parish public schools and office buildings.

C E R T I F I C A T E

I, Philip Martin, Secretary of the Terrebonne Parish School Board, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct resolution approved by the School Board of Terrebonne Parish in regular session on January 9, 2018, at which meeting a quorum was present.

The 2017 Marching Sensation from the Braves Reservation made H. L. Bourgeois history by placing THIRD in the  Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands, held at ULL’s Cajun Field, on Saturday, November 4, 2017! The band received ratings of superior in Drum Major, Percussion, Guard, and Band earning them a sweepstakes. The band also was awarded 2nd place best in class in the very competitive AAA classification.

For the first time in the 28 year history of the event, and in school history, the marching band scored high enough in the preliminary performance to qualify them for a finals performance with the top 11 bands of the night.

H. L. Bourgeois performed second in the finals performance and would later be awarded a numerical score of 88.93  for their show “Fly Beyond: Why the Caged Bird Sings,” enough to make them the first HLB band to finish in the contest’s coveted Top 10, earning them the title and final ranking of the 3rd best band at the state championship. The band competed against 35 schools throughout the state and was 3rd next to Lafayette High School and Central Lafourche.

Adeline Martin, a member of the South Terrebonne Class of 2018 was named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.

Adeline Martin - 2018 National Merit Scholarhip Semifinalist - South Terrebonne High School Class of 2018

Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit® Scholarship Program

10/12/2017 - (Evanston, Illinois)

Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000   Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.  About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

Steps in the 2018 Competition

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

National Merit Scholarships

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2018.  Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 230 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 190 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2018 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 330,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Pack the Bus is a donation drive throughout Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes sponsored by Synergy Bank and the United Way for South Louisiana for the purpose of collecting school supplies for families in need in both parishes.  Collection bins were set up throughout Terrebonne and Lafourche.  The school districts receive the supplies and use their own system of distribution.  The total estimated cost of the items that Terrebonne Parish received was $4,750.00.

School supplies are first provided to non-homeless families needing assistance in the Terrebonne Parish School District.  The remaining school supplies are then distributed to our 4 high schools, 3 junior high schools, 6 middle schools, and 4 of our elementary schools.

The Terrebonne Parish School District would like to thank all of the citizens who donated to this cause.  It is a great support of the students in Terrebonne Parish!

Many students will benefit from this great contribution!

Coteau-Bayou Blue Elementary School held field day on May 12th. The principal, Mrs. Tess Daigle, along with a parent volunteer, Mrs. Sara Mestar, enjoyed competing against 6th graders in the "Hungry, Hungry Human" game.

~ Source Wikipedia.com~

Hungry Hungry Hippos is a tabletop game made for 2–4 players, produced by Hasbro, under the brand of its subsidiary, Milton Bradley. The idea for the game was published in 1967 by toy inventor Fred Kroll and it was introduced in 1978. The objective of the game is for each player to collect as many marbles as possible with their 'hippo' (a toy hippo model).

The game board is surrounded by four mechanical, colorful, plastic hippopotamuses operated by levers on their backs. When the lever is pressed, the hippo opens its mouth and extends its head forwards on a telescopic neck. When the lever is released, the head comes down and retracts. Colored plastic marbles are dispensed into the board by each player, and the players repeatedly press the lever on their hippo in order to have it "eat" the marbles, which travel down from under the hippo into a small scoring area for each player. Once all marbles have been captured, the player who has collected the most is the winner.

Village East School held its inaugural Village East Alumni Senior Walk. Graduating Seniors from Ellender Memorial High School and South Terrebonne High School were invited to take a walk through the halls of Village East, as the current students cheered them on and congratulated them on reaching this milestone in their lives. The Village East students were inspired as the seniors told of their plans after high school, shared their favorite memories of Village East, and offered words of advice to the younger students. The teachers were able to enjoy seeing that their efforts with the students do yield very positive results in the lives of the children they teach. The teachers felt very encouraged and had renewed energy after leaving the assembly. The seniors thanked the teachers for being there for them when they were younger. The current students couldn't wait to get back in class to tell their teachers what they want to do when they grow up and get to be the ones being celebrated for graduating.

New York Jets Running Back, and Village East Alumni, Elijah McGuire visited the students at Village East School on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, the eve of the NFL Draft.  He spoke to the students about the importance of testing and encouraged the students to always make good choices and follow their dreams.

The students were excited and inspired by being able to see someone that had walked the very halls and sat in the same classrooms, that they are in now,  be able to fulfill a lifelong dream of making it to the NFL. He provided a great example to the students of not letting your current circumstances define what your future can become. "Great things come from the Village."

The students and faculty wished him continued success and are excited about testing that is taking place this week.

In their annual review of the nation’s 22,000 high schools, U.S. News and World Report named Terrebonne High a bronze medal school and rated THS as one of the nation’s leading high schools.  Only the top 30% of the nation’s high schools receive this distinction from the magazine.  Terrebonne High was ranked 30th in schools in Louisiana out-ranking all the other high schools in Terrebonne Parish and the surrounding parishes of Lafourche and St. Charles.  Criteria used for judging schools included a high graduation rate, college preparedness (number of AP courses offered and high ACT scores), the performance of minority students and low-income students as compared to those nationally, and that students at Terrebonne High outperform both the district and state on EOC tests in English and Math.  We are proud of the great work of our faculty and student body at THS in achieving this national recognition.
